THAI BIO LABS scientific assessment

Evidence in context.

Key takeaways
  • Obesity and diabetes trials use different populations and endpoints. [1][2]
  • The tested pharmaceutical preparation is separate from a TBL vial.

SURMOUNT-1, SURPASS-2 and SURMOUNT-5 examine different comparators and metabolic populations. Their findings should not become a universal superiority claim. [1][2][3]

Research overview

What the published record is evaluating.

Tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors. The comparative SURPASS-2 trial evaluated it against a specified semaglutide regimen in adults with type 2 diabetes. [2]

Selected studies

Findings and their limits.

SURMOUNT-1 enrolled 2,539 adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related complication, excluding diabetes. This double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed weight change over 72 weeks and reported greater reductions with tirzepatide. It is a population-specific clinical finding. [1]

SURPASS-2 randomised 1,879 participants with type 2 diabetes in an open-label, 40-week trial. Tirzepatide reduced HbA1c more than the semaglutide regimen tested. Open-label design and the exact comparator matter when interpreting the result. [2]

SURMOUNT-5 (2025) randomised 751 adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes to tirzepatide or semaglutide in an open-label, 72-week trial. The primary endpoint was percentage weight change. Tirzepatide produced greater reduction under the tested regimens; gastrointestinal events were the most common adverse events in both groups. This is a direct comparison, unlike comparisons assembled from separate placebo-controlled studies. [3]

Primary research areas

  • Glycaemic outcomes in type 2 diabetes

Evidence quality

Strengths and limitations, shown together.

Strengths
  • The selected papers report randomised comparisons with specified endpoints and follow-up. [1][2][3]
Current limitations
  • A result against one comparator regimen is not a claim against every alternative regimen.
  • These trials do not verify a research lot or establish an individual response.

Safety & tolerability evidence

Published safety context.

Gastrointestinal adverse events were common in SURPASS-2. Its efficacy result should be read with the adverse-event and discontinuation data, rather than as a stand-alone benefit statement. [2]

Scientific outlook

Where the evidence may develop next.

Updates should add indication-specific outcome and safety studies, rather than raising a global evidence score.

INTERPRETATION FRAMEWORK

Different records. Different questions.

Three connected layers help interpret the evidence. They answer different questions and cannot substitute for one another.

Narrative Review

What the published scientific record reports, including its scope, findings and limitations.

Evidence Index

A structured reading framework. For metabolic peptides, it also preserves the original dated editorial scores and component breakdowns.

Batch Record

Analytical identity and other lot-specific documentation for a THAI BIO LABS material, when published.

Use the Evidence Index to examine the research interpretation and Batch Records to review documentation for a specific lot.

Research-use boundary

Clinical literature and THAI BIO LABS research materials are not the same record.

Published studies may concern approved medicines, investigational pharmaceutical material or other controlled research preparations. THAI BIO LABS materials are supplied for laboratory research use only and are not represented as medicines or substitutes for regulated pharmaceutical products.
